On June 8, 1995, Vatican City issued a series of definitive stamps highlighting the theme "European Year of Nature Conservation." In 1970, the Council of Europe proclaimed the first "European Year of Nature Conservation." In order to renew and stimulate commitment to the protection and safeguarding of nature on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the initial campaign, the Council of Europe proclaimed 1995 as "European Year of Nature Conservation."
The stamps are vertical, measure 28.56 x 39.23 mm, and have a perforation of 11 3/4. The inscription 1995 - ANNO EUROPEO DELLA CONSERVAZ lONE DELLA NATURA appears at the top of each stamp. The Papal Tiara and Crossed Keys, the words CITTA DEL VATICANO, and a tom leaf held together by a pin (the official logo issued by the Council of Europe) appear at the bottom. The name of the place shown and the value appear within the picture on each stamp. The 750-lire stamp depicts Acer negundo variegatum argenteum in the Viale dell'Osservatorio, Vatican Gardens.
The stamps were produced on white, chalky paper in multicolor rotogravure and printed in sheets of twenty by Helio Courvoisier S. A. of Switzerland. Reference: Crimando, Thomas. "New Issues."
